Arthritis and Ozone Therapy: A Closer Look at the Joint, the Research, and the Results

Arthritis is one of the most prevalent chronic conditions affecting quality of life worldwide. What the Research Shows


The volume and quality of research into ozone therapy for arthritis has grown steadily over the past decade. A 2024 double-blind randomised controlled trial demonstrated that ozone proved effective in reducing pain and improving functional mobility in patients with knee osteoarthritis, with benefits observed across the 3 to 6 month follow-up period.


In rheumatoid arthritis specifically, clinical research published in Pharmaceuticals in 2024 by León Fernández and colleagues — some of the most respected researchers in ozone pharmacology — demonstrated that ozone therapy combined with standard drug treatment produced significantly greater improvements in antioxidant defences, reductions in injury biomarkers, and meaningful decreases in pain and disability scores compared with standard treatment alone. This was observed in RA patients even after accounting for the naturally elevated oxidative stress seen in this group compared to OA.


An earlier controlled study involving 60 patients with RA found that 20 rectal ozone insufflations, applied alongside conventional methotrexate therapy, produced greater improvements in disease activity scores, pain scales and antioxidant capacity than methotrexate alone. An important secondary finding emerged from this study: ozone also reduced the liver toxicity associated with long-term methotrexate use.


These are not isolated findings. They reflect a consistent pattern: ozone therapy improves the biochemical environment that arthritis disrupts, and does so without the side effect profile of prolonged pharmaceutical use.

This point deserves particular attention.
