Vaginal Insufflation: What Ozone Therapy Offers for Women's Health

Women's health has historically been an underfunded and under-researched area of medicine, which makes the body of evidence that has quietly accumulated around vaginal ozone therapy all the more interesting. This is a method with decades of clinical history, a growing evidence base, and a scope that extends well beyond what most people initially expect.

Vaginal insufflation, the introduction of a medical-grade ozone-oxygen mixture into the vaginal cavity, is recognised by the International Scientific Committee of Ozone Therapy (ISCO3) and included in the Madrid Declaration as an established ozone application method. It is used in clinical settings for everything from recurrent infections to fertility support, and increasingly by women at home as part of a proactive reproductive and immune wellness practice.

The Antimicrobial Case: A Different Kind of Solution

For women dealing with recurrent vaginal infections, whether Candida, bacterial vaginosis, or more complex conditions, the frustration of the conventional treatment cycle is familiar. Antibiotics and antifungals work in the short term, but they often disrupt the vaginal microbiome in the process, creating the conditions for rebound infection. It is a cycle many women know well, and breaking it requires a different approach.

This is where ozone's selectivity becomes clinically meaningful. Ozone's antimicrobial mechanism specifically targets organisms that lack antioxidant defences, essentially pathogens, while leaving the beneficial lactobacilli that form the backbone of healthy vaginal flora intact. Multiple clinical studies have confirmed that ozone therapy does not disrupt the normal vaginal microbiome, which means it addresses the infection without setting the stage for the next one.

A clinical study involving 150 patients with chronic Candida albicans vaginitis, resistant to standard drug treatment, found that vaginal ozone insufflation combined with ozonated oil produced an 85% favourable response rate. The researchers noted that ozone's effect appeared to work not only on the pathogen directly, but through broader immune activation.

Research from Russia, where ozone therapy has been integrated into mainstream gynaecological practice for decades, has documented ozone's effectiveness against bacterial vaginosis organisms including Gardnerella vaginalis, Chlamydia, Ureaplasma, Mycoplasma, and Cytomegalovirus; including strains not reliably cleared by standard antibiotic protocols. For women with complex or recurrent infections, this breadth of antimicrobial action is significant.

The Ohen Model 5 is used by gynaecological practitioners and ozone specialists for vaginal insufflation protocols precisely because consistent concentration control is central to achieving these kinds of outcomes. The difference between a therapeutic ozone concentration and one that either under-delivers or irritates tissue is a matter of precise calibration, not approximation.

Reproductive Health and Fertility

The clinical scope of vaginal ozone therapy reaches into fertility and reproductive function in ways that deserve wider attention. A comprehensive review published in Medical Gas Research examined the evidence across multiple areas of female reproductive health and found meaningful results:

  • Tubal occlusion: a study of 400 infertile women with tubal obstruction found significantly higher recanalization rates in the ozone-treated group than in controls.

  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID): ozone therapy reduced inflammatory markers and endometrial injury in PID, with immune function parameters improving meaningfully in treated patients.

  • Endometritis and vaginitis: ozone demonstrated protective effects in both animal and human studies.

  • Post-inflammatory pelvic adhesions: preliminary evidence suggests ozone may reduce adhesion formation following pelvic inflammation or surgery.

These findings position vaginal insufflation not just as a treatment for infection, but as a potentially meaningful tool for women navigating the complex and often emotionally charged territory of fertility and reproductive health.

The HPV Research: An Emerging Frontier

One of the more quietly exciting areas of emerging research involves ozone therapy and HPV management. A 2025 review published in the journal Cancers examined the scientific rationale for ozone-oxygen vaginal insufflation as a preventive approach in HPV-related disease of the lower gynaecological tract. The paper cited experimental evidence from transgenic mouse studies in which 85.7% of untreated mice developed dysplastic lesions compared to only 28.6% in the ozone-treated group.

The authors were appropriately cautious about extrapolating from animal data to human clinical recommendations, and more trials are needed. But for women who have received an HPV diagnosis and find themselves in a watch-and-wait situation with limited active options, the direction of this research is genuinely worth being aware of and discussing with our specialists.

The Systemic Dimension

Vaginal insufflation is not only a localised therapy. The highly vascularised vaginal mucosa absorbs ozone efficiently into the bloodstream and lymphatic system, producing immune-stimulating, antioxidant, and tissue-oxygenating effects throughout the body. Many women who take up regular vaginal insufflation as part of a broader wellness practice report improvements well beyond the gynaecological: better energy, clearer thinking, reduced susceptibility to infections, and a general sense of resilience they attribute, at least in part, to ozone's systemic influence.

For those new to this therapy, the learning curve is genuinely gentle. With a well-designed generator and appropriate guidance, vaginal insufflation is straightforward to incorporate into a home wellness routine. The Ohen Model 5 is built to make that transition from concept to confident practice as smooth as possible, combining personalised therapy support with the ease of use that makes home therapy accessible to anyone committed to their health.
